Paul Kelly & Dan Sultan Unveil Collab ‘Every Day My Mother’s Voice’ From Adam Goodes Doco

Paul Kelly and Dan Sultan have teamed up to grace us with ‘Every Day My Mother’s Voice’, a track penned by Kelly for a new documentary about AFL star Adam Goodes.

The Final Quarter, a doco following the final three years of Goodes’ career, will premiere at the Sydney Film Festival next month and the new single forms its closing track.

Written specifically for the doco, ‘Every Day My Mother’s Voice’ is all about the deep bond between Goodes and his mother Lisa, according to the film’s director and producer, Ian Darling.

“I’ve always loved the way Paul writes ballads and when I asked him to write a new song for Adam, I knew he would do it in his own original way. Paul saw a rough cut of the film and then a few weeks later this classic song arrived,” he says.

“[It] reminds us of all mothers and children. Paul wrote the song specifically with Dan Sultan in mind to perform it with him, which made it even more perfect,’’ Darling says.

The Final Quarter will use archival footage only to tell the story of Adam Goodes’ career.

Goodes was an Indigenous leader who called out racism and poor fan behaviour in the AFL and faced backlash from some AFL fans in doing so.

In his final years, the Swans great was also named Australian of the Year, was accused of staging for free kicks, and famously performed a war-dance celebration on-field.

‘Every Day My Mother’s Voice’ is out today along with a film clip of fellow Aussie legends Kelly and Sultan performing the track, with intermittent footage and sound bites of Goodes’ on- and off-field triumphs.
