Watch Deftones Perform Rare Track ‘Smile’ Live For The First Time Ever

Deftones have pulled a surprise out of the bag during their set at their second ever Dia De Los Deftones Festival in San Diego.

It came in the form of an unexpected setlist addition, with the band giving rare track ‘Smile’ off their lost Eros LP its live debut, more than a decade after the fact.

As most fans will know, Eros was shelved in 2008 after late bassist Chi Cheng was involved in a severe car accident, and the record remains unfinished.

Frontman Chino Moreno did upload ‘Smile’ to YouTube on the first anniversary of Cheng’s death in 2014, only to have it removed soonafter by their label, Warner, who cried copyright infringement.

Despite its only temporary existence online, ‘Smile’ remains the only Eros recording to have ever seen the light of day.

It seems like a heartening development then, that the metal titans have finally decided to play it live for the first time.

It’s a heavy, melodic, mid-tempo track and you can watch the footage of its live debut below!
