Tom Tilley has announced he’ll be leaving triple j at the end of the year, after 12 years with the national broadcaster – eight of which as the host of Hack.
“It’s been a mind blowing ride for me. As a naive triple j listener growing up in Mudgee, I could never have imagined what’s played out,” commented Tilly about his departure.
“Now it’s time to let another passionate hungry young journo take the reins at Hack and for me to take the next step in my career.”
Tilley noted that he was particularly proud of the spotlight he’d been able to shine on mental health issues amongst young Australians with the Hack platform.
“We quickly realised that mental health was the most important issue facing our audience. They opened up and we listened,” wrote Tilly in an Instagram post confirming the news.
“In some cases these people have never told anyone what they were going through. My hope was that they’d realise they didn’t have to suffer alone and that there was help. We then took those experiences and challenged the politicians to do more. Thankfully in the last eight years mental health funding has increased substantially and the number of Headspace centres has almost tripled.”
Tilley is going on to pursue a range of other projects – he’ll continue to work with The Project on Channel Ten, and has a book deal with ABC Books.
Tilley will wrap up his time at triple j in mid-December. The station is set to announce their 2020 presenter line-up later in the week.
