Roxette’s Marie Fredriksson Has Died, Age 61

Sad news today as Marie Fredriksson, frontwoman of iconic Swedish band Roxette, has passed away after a long battle with cancer. She was 61 years old.

BBC reports that Fredriksson had battled with cancer for 17 years after being diagnosed with a brain tumour back in 2002, which was discovered after she collapsed in her kitchen following a workout.

While she did lose vision in her right eye, Fredriksson received treatment and was back touring with the band from 2008. However, the cancer had returned and her family said she had died “following a recurrence of ‘her previous illness’ earlier this week.”

“You were the most wonderful friend for over 40 years,” said her bandmate Per Gessle in a statement.

“Things will never be the same.”

“I’m proud, honoured and happy to have been able to share so much of your time, talent, warmth, generosity and sense of humour. All my love goes out to you and your family.”

Roxette were responsible for some of the most defining pop hits of the 80s and 90s, including ‘The Look’, ‘It Must Have Been Love’ and ‘Listen To Your Heart’.

Vale, Marie Fredriksson.
