Our pals at Pixar have announced there’s a brand new film in the works called Luca. It’s a bit of a kick in the travel-bugged guts around the world, but it follows the story of a boy, named Luca, who grows up on the Italian Riviera. And then, also gets to go on an adventure. Imagine.
Luca is directed by Enrico Casarosa, who receives an Oscar nomination for his La Luna (short film showed before Brave in 2012). The new film is a coming of age story about a boy who makes a really good friend over the Summer. The big twist is that Luca is secretly a sea monster but his friend doesn’t know.

On the film, Casarosa says, “This is a deeply personal story for me, not only because it’s set on the Italian Riviera where I grew up, but because at the core of this film is a celebration of friendship.”
“Childhood friendships often set the course of who we want to become and it is those bonds that are at the heart of our story,” he said.
“So in addition to the beauty and charm of the Italian seaside, our film will feature an unforgettable summer adventure that will fundamentally change Luca.”
As pointed out by Paste Magazine, the film description boasts serious Call Me By Your Name vibes. That is, Luca Guadagnino’ 2017’s Oscar-nominated hit staring one Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer.
The similarities are eerily uncanny. Pixar describes Luca: as “Set in a beautiful seaside town” – check. “A coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer”- big check. “Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret” – major check. You love to see it.
Luca is expected to arrive in cinemas in about year.
