Director Josh Boone has shared some of the details around his upcoming biopic on raucous alt rock legends The Replacements, which will take its cues from Bob Mehr’s excellent book about the band, Trouble Boys.
For one, Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars) will portray frontman Paul Westerberg, while Bloodline’s Owen Teague will play bassist Tommy Stinson. Both actors will appear in Boone’s forthcoming miniseries The Stand, based on the 1978 novel of the same name by Stephen King.
Speaking to Games Radar about his X-men spin-off The New Mutants, Boone also discussed looking ahead. In the interview, Boone says he started working on an adaptation of the book with Knate Lee, who he also co-wrote the screenplay for New Mutants with.
“So Nat Wolff is going to play Paul Westerberg. Nat’s been in just about everything I’ve done. He was in The Stand. He starred in my first movie. He was in The Fault in Our Stars. He’s one of the best actors on the planet,” Boone revealed.
“Owen Teague, who is in The Stand, is going to play Tommy Stinson in it – really in the second half of it, because in the first half, Tommy Stinson is like a 12-year-old. They were a band who had like a 12 or 13-year-old bass player through a lot of their early years. So, yeah, we’ve been working on that for years, and that’s really exciting. We’ve got all the scripts done for that, so I’m literally casting that right now. I’m going to go make that.”
The Minnesota band formed in 1979, and would go on to be one of the most influential alternative rock bands with albums like Let It Be, Tim and Pleased to Meet Me. Breaking up in 1991, the group reunited in 2012, performing a slew of festival and headline shows before calling it quits again in 2015.
