The Queen’s Gambit Is Getting The Stage Musical Treatment

Last year saw Netflix transform Walter Tevis’ 1983 novel The Queen’s Gambit into a wildly popular TV series. Now, it looks like it might be getting the stage musical treatment too.

The Hollywood Reporter says that production company Level Forward have acquired “theatrical stage rights” to the novel.

“It is a privilege for Level Forward to lead the charge of bringing The Queen’s Gambit to the stage through the beloved and enduring craft of musical theatre,” say Level Forward’s CEO Adrienne Becker and producer Julia Dunetz in a press statement.

They’re saying the musical will tell the novel’s story through a fresh point of view.

“Audiences are already sharing in the friendship and fortitude of the story’s inspiring women who energize and sustain Beth Harmon’s journey and ultimate triumph.

“The story is a siren call amidst our contemporary struggles for gender and racial equity, and we’re looking forward to moving the project forward.”

The Queen’s Gambit saw massive popularity last year after the 7-part series was released on Netflix.

Based on Walter Tevis’ 1983 novel, it tells the story of an orphaned chess prodigy in the ’60s.

The soundtrack for the show is kind of iconic too. It features ‘You’re The One’ from The Vogues, The Association’s ‘Along Comes Mary’, The Monkees’ ‘(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone’, and Peggy Lee’s ‘Fever’.
