The Hunger Games is a sci-fi action drama film directed by Gary Ross and based on the novel written by Suzanne Collins. It stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth and will to be released on March 23, 2012.
The movie is set in the future, where every year the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. The games are then televised nationally and each contestant must fight to the death until one survivor is left.
The sci-fi novel was first published in September 2008; it is the first book of the Hunger Games trilogy. Author Suzanne Collins stated that the idea for The Hunger Games came from channel surfing on television. On one channel she watched people competing on a reality show and on another she saw footage of the Iraq War. The two blended together and the idea for the book was formed.
