Genre: Hip hop, pop

The 411Hey! Astro is the project of 19-year-old Filipino/Italian songwriter Owen Elepano. Elepano grew up in Terrigal on the New South Wales Central Coast. He started experimenting with music while participating in friendly schoolyard ciphers. He soon got hooked on the process of crafting songs, drawing influence from pop megastars, Japanese anime and melodic and emo-tinged SoundCloud rappers.

Review: Hey! Astro’s new single ‘Place to Speak’ is more indie pop than hip hop. Elepano still carves out room to demonstrate his highly flexible flow, but the guitars recall Mac Demarco and the upbeat drum programming resembles the lo-fi bedroom pop creations of Girl In Red.

“‘Place To Speak’ is a representation of my growth, not only in my writing ability but in my life as a whole,” Elepano said in a statement.

‘Place to Speak’ is the artist’s first release since signing with Melbourne-based label I OH YOU, which is also home to Hayley Mary, DMA’S and DZ Deathrays. “We are thrilled to be welcoming Hey! Astro to the I OH YOU family,” said I OH YOU’s Sarah Morgan. “We’ve been following his work for some time now and have been so impressed by how he has honed his craft at such a young age.”
