Michael Lawler

Hunter Young
Hunter Young, of the band Silence, has titled his second audition track Grey Skies and begins the song with a powerful, reverberant scream. His interpretation of the song also showcases his production skills as he layers echoing clean vocals over looped screams.

Curt Hardin
Singer Curt Hardin takes his time on this audition, showcasing a pristine singing voice with considered lyrics about isolation and loneliness, before building up to an emotional crescendo in time with the original track’s sparse percussion.

Marcus Bridge
Vocalist Marcus Bridge’s interpretation of the song is commendable not only for his impressive clean vocal abilities but also for his uplifting lyricism. For his track Grateful, Bridge explores the fleeting nature of pain. Bridge also shared with viewers that the song is about his experience of losing his father to an overdose and coming out of that dark place feeling grateful.

Ross Day
Ross Day has also dedicated his song to his father and peppered through the track are spoken-sung verses of Day seemingly speaking directly to him. “I can only be strong for one/ We set course for a destination/ Let us pass this devastation,” he sings cryptically.

Shaun Coar
Shaun Coar uses this rendition to showcase his impressive vocal range, only unleashing his first scream to full effect at the 2:50 minute mark. The track is titled The Quiet but the song is far from that, as he sings of taking the leap, blindly, into the “unknown”.

Justin Dengate
The slow-building instrumentation of Singularity seems to have inspired vocalist Justin Dengate to pen a song about fathering a newborn. “A speck of life upon a screen/ I lose myself in your heartbeat,” he sings sweetly. While his clean singing ticks all the boxes, Dengate doesn’t forget to show off his screaming chops too.

Tom Weaver
Tom Weaver of South Wales outfit Well Wisher covered all bases in his Singularity rendition, showcasing all facets of his versatile voice while revealing deeply personal lyrics. He begins in a soft, sung whisper, before moving on to a spoken word verse and finally unleashing his powerful scream as he tells us, “no one should have to feel as though they’re alone”.

UPDATE 14/10/14 6.27pm: Some of the previously announced finalists have already revealed that they have not been chosen for the Northlane frontman role. Tim Westwood, Hunter Young, Aeden Cooper, Cade Armstrong and Shaun Coar have all revealed the news via their personal Facebook accounts.
