Drawing upon an eclectic palette of neo-soul and R&B influences, Melbourne musician AVA’s debut single ‘Business Man’ is anchored by a jazzy, lush sonic backdrop, with the singer’s soulful vocal delivery underscoring its themes of feminine empowerment.
Produced by Julian Steel and Aldwin Cajili, the song sees AVA playfully utilise an extended metaphor about business culture to explore the pitfalls of a one-sided relationship as she addresses a lover.
“Didn’t your father ever tell you business has no business in love? / Can’t replace communication with negotiation, no,” AVA sings on the track’s opening verse above spacious guitar chords, a groove-heavy bassline and understated percussion. “I know I’m not a growing asset or investment of your time.”
These themes demonstrate AVA’s strong identification with female empowerment and self-healing reminiscent of artists such as Erykah Badu, Beyonce and SZA.
