LINEUPS – YOU’RE DOING IT RIGHT

Originally touring with lineups composed exclusively of punk and ska bands, the current tour roster has gone through considerable changes. The lineup simultaneously reflects the current trends in heavy alternative music while holding considerable influence on the tastes of young festivalgoers. The tour’s lineup has been highly influential in the development of pop-punk, third-wave ska, emo, post-hardcore and metalcore.

The first ever Vans Warped Tour in 1995 featured the likes of No Doubt, Sublime, No Use For A Name, L7, Sick Of It All, Swingin’ Utters and a slightly odd choice in ringer My Bloody Valentine.

The first Vans Warped Tour in Australia arrived in 1998 with a punk and ska-based lineup featuring Blink-182, 311, Pennywise, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Die Toten Hosen, The Vandals, Frenzal Rhomb, Bodyjar, Royal Crown Revue, The Living End and The Porkers. The last Australian lineup, in 2002, saw the likes Pennywise, Guttermouth, MxPx, The Vandals and Unwritten Law play across three stages

Lyman has been quoted as saying that “if it was the just the ‘Kevin Lyman Tour,’ it’d be Bad Religion, NOFX, Flogging Molly, and The Bouncing Souls all the time”. Always one to put his fans first, Lyman’s festival has now been host to a wide variety of bands and artists from Fall Out Boy, The All-American Rejects and Panic! At The Disco to Avenged Sevenfold, Deftones and The Dillinger Escape Plan to The Black Eyed Peas, Eminem and D12.

Interestingly, the tour was also instrumental in establishing the career of Katy Perry (see page 8) — Lyman considers this one of his proudest achievements.
