Tinpan Orange’s 8 Tips For Bands Just Starting Out

Beloved Ozzie folk band Tinpan Orange have announced the release and ensuing tour of their brand new album Love is a Dog, due for release April 8th. The band have announced twelve dates nation wide that will span the months of April, May and June, kicking off at Fairbridge Folk Festival in WA on April 15th, and ahead of the epic tour, we sat down with the band to get their hottest tips for bands just getting started in the biz.

1. Go to gigs. Listen to albums. The music industry is really a community and you should be a part of it. Also it’s good to know the musical landscape you are in to know how your music can be part of the conversation. Listen a lot.

2. Try to chose people you love playing with and you don’t mind spending hours, days and months with; sometimes in small spaces, sometimes in places where no one speaks your language, sometimes in not so idilic situations. Choose at least one bandmate who could save you in a hurricane.

3. Develop at least one signature dance move.

4. Don’t be late. For flights, for sound checks, for gigs. I learnt that the hard way.

5. Respect your audience. They don’t really owe you anything so work hard and put on a good show.

6. Play lots of gigs. Try new things. And try play the best show you’ve ever played every time. Even if there are two people, one bar guy and a dog in the audience. We’ve all done those gigs and they are essential for a bands development. As Paul Kelly says, play to the people who are listening.

7. Say yes. Take every oppertunity you can at the beginning. Then at some point you can start saying no and refining your activity.

8. Practice. Practice. Practice. Practice.
