Adele has entered phase two of her plan for global domination, releasing the follow-up to her record-breaking single Hello (which is still number 1 pretty much everywhere btw), dubbed When We Were Young.
We first heard a snippet of the song – a Tobias Jesso Jr. collab – along with footage of its live performance clip yesterday, in a preview teaser for 60 Minutes‘ upcoming interview with the soul diva.
But now here it is in all of its emotional glory, a piano-driven ballad with a melody that burns slowly before soaring into the heavens on the wings of nostalgia. Its happy-sad lyrics, which feel like a sequel to Hello, will rock you right in the feels. We’re talking serious sentimental tremors and wistful pangs.
Basically, if you listen to this song and don’t shed at least a single lonely tear then you’re probably dead inside.
The video for the second song off Adele’s hysterically-anticipated comeback album, 25, was filmed at London’s Church Studios, where much of the album was also recorded.
Adele has previously explained how the musical team-up with T-J-J first came about, explaining: “We met up in LA and I absolutely loved him; his vibe, his humour, the way he plays piano – so felt. The music he makes is romantic, with a ’70s vibe.
“It turned out he was a really big fan of mine – and he totally kept his cool together, being thrown in the deep end, for our first co-writing session,” she continued.
“His grandparents were friends with Philip Glass, and Tobias had inherited Philip Glass’s old piano. We wrote our song, When We Were Young, on that piano. How cool is that? I’m definitely going to work with him again. He’s my new secret weapon.”
Adele’s new album, 25, is tipped to arrive this Friday 20th November.
