Melbourne muso Ali Barter has announced a national headline tour that will kick off this December. She has just supported indie heavyweights City Calm Down and The Jezabels, leaving her more-ready-than-ever to embark on a string of her own headline shows spanning the east-side of the country.
Barter’s latest single Girlie Bits features her new and evolved sound, which merges ’90s grunge vibes, striking lyrics and powerful vocals. This is a tune that is all about tying in rock riffs with stirring and emotive words, keeping the torch of punk ablaze in a slightly sweeter setting, and standing up for what you believe in.
“I’ve been singing and performing since I was a kid and there’s always these voices trying to sculpt, pick and prod you into some acceptable form,” says Barter. “Women are not some gentle, watered down version of men. We do it our own way. We work really hard to write good songs and play great gigs – only to have people critique our clothes and the look on our faces, instead of the music.”
Following on from her 2015 EP, Girlie Bits gives us just a sample of what’s to come from Barter, with a full length album in the works, she has confirmed to triple j.
