Australia’s New Solar-Powered Festival OFFtheGRID Announces 2015 Lineup

Australia’s first solar-powered music festival OFFtheGRID is set to light up the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art this summer solstice.

Taking place on the longest day of the year, December 22nd, the art and technology extravaganza is putting on a huge spread, enlisting some of Australia’s best and brightest young acts to perform on a solar-powered stage, and raise funds for a more self-sufficient Melbourne.

The first lineup announcement – curated by influential DJ and tastemaker Edd Fisher – features the likes of Cut Copy DJs, Banoffee, Tornado Wallace, Wax’o Paradiso and more, with a second round of acts to be announced soon.

Together, they’ll help party-starters Finding Infinity celebrate renewable energy solutions at their biggest fiesta yet, following similar parties in London and Mexico.

The team have managed to build a five-metre high solar stage and state-of-the-art battery bank to power the event, and see OFFtheGRID’s heliocentric music lovers through the day and night.

“We’re going to party and we’re not gonna stop until we power the whole city with renewable energy”, the organisation’s Ross Harding proclaimed in a statement.

And that’s not all – the festival’s zero waste policy will also see any recyclables recycled and any organic waste used for compost, while any other leftovers on the site will be used to create a work of art that will be auctioned off, with all proceeds to go towards local renewable energy initiatives.

Similarly, all funds raised from the festival itself will go directly towards a renewable power plant in the city of Melbourne. And then, in a beautiful circle-of-life style twist, all revenue from the plant will go on to fund the next party.

“The language of renewable energy has been lost in elitism to confuse and delay change,” Melbourne artist Banoffee claims. “This festival is a step towards a different type of communication. We need to start leading by example and show people how tangible this change is.”
