Bernard Fanning has released a music video for deep cut Departures (Blue Toowong Skies), the almost-title track from his upcoming second solo album Departures, due out next Friday, 7th June.
The clip contains snippets of Super 8 footage shot in Queensland during the ’80s and although the song is not an official single, the music and video pay tribute the Bernard’s deceased father and brother, as Fanning explains:
“My dad died at the beginning of 2011 which coincided with the biggest floods Brisbane has seen. This was something that loomed pretty large for me over the whole writing period of this album and I suppose a song like this was bound to come out.
“The lyric is talking about the place in Brisbane where I grew up, Toowong, a near city suburb that my Dad also spent his childhood in and ended up being buried in, along with my older brother, who I now happen to be older than.”
Following the release of Departures, Fanning will be hitting the road from July for a national headlining tour as well as a sneaky set at tiny, tiny Byron Bay festival Splendour In The Grass.
