In an especially Björk move, her new box set for her 2017 album Utopia comes with 14 handmade flutes…because of course it does.
In all fairness to the Icelandic legend, flutes play a huge sonic role in Utopia, and she gave a statement with the announcement of the box set as to the pivotal role the instrument played in the record.
“Utopia is so much about birdsong and sonically the mutation between synth/bird, bird/flute, flute/synth,” she wrote.
“Air like that was a theme through all of the album. So i got very excited when I found these handmade wooden flutes imitating precisely particular birds, and i guess wanted you guys to have an opportunity to share that with me.”
We’ve always wanted to birdcall with Björk, and we’re so grateful we finally get the chance to.
These flutes, made especially for bird calling, were made in collaboration with French company Quelle est Belle, and the box-set will set you back just under $900 AUD. Worth it, imo.
