Childish Gambino Tells Australian Crowd They “Should Be Proud” Of Tame Impala

Over the weekend, Childish Gambino performed a Splendour in the Grass sideshow in Perth. According to Pilerats, Gambino – AKA Donald Glover – took a moment during the performance to shout out fellow Splendour headliner (and hometown heroes) Tame Impala.

“Do y’all fuck with Tame Impala? I fuck with Tame Impala,” Glover told the crowd at Perth’s HBF Stadium on Sunday.

“Black people really fuck with Tame Impala, y’all should be proud of him.”

Tame Impala and Childish Gambino have been on a couple of festival bills lately, most recently the pair co-headlined Coachella. Both acts will also appear at Splendour in the Grass this weekend – and while it’s probably too much to ask for an onstage collab, you never know. Given that Tame Impala mastermind Kevin Parker brought out A$AP Rocky during the aforementioned Coachella set to perform the Impala-sampling ‘Sundress’, he’s clearly not opposed to working with rappers live.

Meanwhile, there has been a glimmer of hope in the sea of speculation that Glover’s current tour is his last. Speaking to Jimmy Kimmel while promoting his upcoming role as Simba in The Lion King remake, Glover said “I think I’m still going to do shows. I’m not quite sure. I broke my foot so I had to make up for those [rescheduled Australian dates], but I really love making music.”

Childish Gambino’s Australian tour continues tomorrow night at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne before appearances at Spin Off and Splendour in the Grass over the weekend and finally, Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena next week.

The Lion King hits theatres tomorrow.
