Coldplay performed at the We Can Survive charity concert at the Hollywood Bowl over the weekend. The lineup also included Black Eyed Peas, Shawn Mendes, Saweetie, Doja Cat and The Kid LAROI. But perhaps the night’s most impressive guest was Sporty Spice aka Mel C.
The rest of the band left the stage ahead of the performance, leaving Martin to ponder what he could do to make this performance extra special. “This is Hollywood, this is Los Angeles—this is where, when you make a wish, it may just come true,” he said. “And one of our dreams is to be able to play a song with a Spice Girl. We’ve been waiting for this for 24 years.”
He then asked the crowd to go quiet and send the wish out into the cosmos. “Wouldn’t it be amazing if a Spice Girl just appeared out of nowhere?” The wish, of course, was granted and Mel C soon arrived onstage in an on-brand track suit. “Now, thank you for coming,” said Martin. “We asked you this morning and you’ve been amazing.”
Before playing the Spice Girls’ 1996 single, ‘2 Become 1’, Martin said, “This is like a sexual anthem, right?” “It really is,” said Mel C. “It has an important message.”
Mel C wasn’t Coldplay’s only guest at We Can Survive. The band’s nine-song setlist was dominated by material from their new album, Music of the Spheres, including the track ‘Human Heart’ featuring American R&B act We Are KING.
