Good news for Melbourne fans unable to see American R&B god D’Angelo make his Australian live debut as part Soulfest 2014 this weekend — D’Angelo has announced his own last-minute headlining sideshow at 170 Russell in Melbourne next Tuesday, 21st October.
So far it appears only the one D’Angelo Soulfest sideshow has been announced. The festival has just confirmed, via Facebook, that D’Angelo has ‘checked in’ to Australia but on the eve of Sydney Soulfest, and with Melbourne Soulfest the next day, it seems unlikely Sydney will get their own sideshow.
In June, D’Angelo’s manager, Kevin Liles, promised fans they’d get a third album from the Virginian songwriter before the year is out. Liles said that 14 songs, plus a couple of bonus tracks, have been recorded for an LP that was then in the mixing and mastering process and shaping up to be a fusion of soul and rock.
D’Angelo first studio album in 14 years is still yet to eventuate but perhaps some new material will be previewed while Down Under. As part of Soulfest 2014, D’Angelo will tour with Mos Def, Common, Maxwell, and Anthony Hamilton among others.
