The Drums Announce New Album ‘Abysmal Thoughts’, Share New Song

New York indie-rockers The Drums have returned with a new single, and the announcement that their fourth album Abysmal Thoughts will arrive this June.

The first taste of the record comes in the form of ‘Blood Under My Belt’, a typically bouncy but thematically heavy song written solely frontman Jonny Pierce, which you can stream in full below.

Pierce recorded Abysmal Thoughts over a 15-month period between Los Angeles and New York, with the same instruments he’s used throughout The Drums’ existence.

Pierce is back to writing all of The Drums’ songs himself, and is playing all of the instruments in the studio too. His material is still heavily autobiographical, and now influenced by the recent dissolution of a longterm personal relationship.

“I said I wanted to let life happen?” Pierce says. “Well, the universe listened and life began to fuck me real good! But honestly, I make the worst art when I’m comfortable. The stuff that resonates with me the longest—and that resonates with others—is always the stuff that comes out of my misery.

“Happiness can be confusing to me. It shows up out of nowhere, and before you can even get used to it, it’s vanished. But Abysmal Thoughts? I can rely on them—and with the political chaos that is raining down, who knows when these dark feelings will subside?”

Abysmal Thoughts is set for release on 16th June. Catch the full tracklist, below.
