Father John Misty has got himself into a bit of mischief again. If it’s not live tweeting a Tinder date, or chatting up a stranger on the streets of Toronto, or deleting songs off Soundcloud because Lou Reed told him to do so in a dream, it’s something else.
This time, FJM is claiming he took LSD at Taylor Swift‘s concert in Melbourne, an experience which ultimately proved the inspiration for Lana Del Rey’s Freak video, in which he starred. Talking to Rolling Stone, via Stereogum, the indie rocker explained the story, but not before prefacing: “certain ideas that you’d be quick to dismiss can be viewed with the significance that they deserve”. Yeah righto, champ.
“I met a bunch of people from her crew at a bar, and they invited me to the show. I got my tour manager to get me some acid: ‘This is written in the stars. I’m supposed to go take acid at this Taylor Swift concert.’”
“I experience the show like an 8-year-old girl — as much as that’s possible for a 35-year-old man…It was holy. It was psychedelic. She fully impregnated my dilated soul with her ideology. I remember laughing uncontrollably. I remember going outside for a smoke and thinking, ‘I need to get back in there.'”
It wasn’t all smooth sailing for FJM though, no. He even has some wise insight to share after going to a Taylor Swift concert.
“There was a disturbing aspect,” the hipster Confucius began. “This insistence on telling girls, ‘I’m normal, don’t let anyone tell you what you should be.’ If you wanted to curate an evening with the Grand Leader, this is what you would do. It’s a very, very false normal. And that’s dangerous.”
This isn’t the first time that Taylor Swift’s and FJM’s careers have intertwined before, as last year he intended to release a cover of Ryan Adams’ cover of Swift’s 1989 in the style of Lou Reed. In the same interview with Rolling Stone, he communicates his contempt for Adams’ work quite clearly, calling it “a grotesque stunt”.
This cover-of-a-cover was the subject of a Facebook post where FJM explained that he had decided to dismantle his project due to Reed telling him off in a dream. FJM has now confirmed that that post was another publicity stunt in itself, explaining further that: “I was taking this dude to task for what I saw as a grotesque stunt and matching it with another grotesque stunt. It ironically became the biggest publicity that I’ve ever received, and that grossed me out. I had to take them down. Which then, of course, made it even bigger. It was such a comedy of errors.”
So in summary: if you’re new to FJM’s antics and you’re confused, don’t worry. The man is a meta marvel, keeping everyone else two steps behind.
