There’s a certain level of online attention you’d expect when you start dating a teen heartthrob like Robert Pattinson but the abuse FKA twigs has faced online is nothing short of disgusting.
During an interview with The Sunday Times Magazine (via Digital Spy), twigs was reduced to tears when describing a particular incident whereby a sick fan had abusive tweets directed at her. The 27 year-old singer had replied to a fan who tweeted a photo of himself with a sick friend, telling twigs that the friend had found comfort in her music during her illness.
“Within 20 seconds it was just like ‘n***er, monkey, ugly, die bitch’, all this stuff on his feed,” she said.
“It broke my heart… This lady who is really sick and is probably going to die.”
She later apologised to the interviewer for breaking down saying, “I thought I was over it, but I’m not.”
The Two Weeks singer has herself had to deal with an onslaught of racist comments online, singled out as a target because of her relationship with Pattinson.
In September of last year twigs took to Twitter to address the racist comments. “I am genuinely shocked and disgusted at the amount of racism that has been infecting my account the past week,” she wrote.
“Racism is unacceptable in the real world, and it’s unacceptable online.”
She admitted during her interview with The Sunday Times that she’s developed a certain “numbness” to those kind of comments, even though originally it seems she wasn’t expecting this reaction to her relationship with the Twilight star.
She said she had not seen the Twilight films and was “naive” to the different levels of fame.
“I don’t engage in that world, even with myself, even with my own career,” she said.
In a reminder of how exceptionally talented and undeserving of this treatment twigs is, she’s just dropped a new song Figure 8 from a soon-to-be-released EP and it’s magnificent.
Listen to it below at about the 50 second mark.
