Sources close to the long-anticipated N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton claim that producer and former N.W.A member Ice Cube‘s son O’Shea Jackson Jr will play his father in the film. The casting is yet to be confirmed by Universal Studios, who also haven’t given the film an official green light.

The Wrap reports that Jackson Sr and director F Gary Gray (The Italian Job) handpicked Jackson Jr to play the role of Ice Cube in the film, despite no previous acting experience. Jackson Jr has however received an endorsement from his father, who told The Guardian in February that he was pushing for his son to secure the part, but wanted to “make sure that he’s the best man for the job.”

The rapper slash actor stated that his son reminds him of himself at that age, saying, “At that age people think that I was all serious and mean, but there was a mixture of hot and cold. I could turn on a dime. And he has my temperament.” He also claimed that Jackson Jr could recite all the words to N.W.A’s seminal 1988 debut album Straight Outta Compton when he was just two years old.

Jackson Jr isn’t the only member of the legendary rap crew’s progeny being considered for a role in the film. The Wrap claim Eazy-E‘s son is lobbying for a part which is reportedly expected to go to an unknown actor, and that Universal could announce the main cast before the end of the week.

“We just tryin’ to tell the story of the world’s most dangerous group,” Ice Cube told MTV News in January. “We’re trying to tell aspects of our lives that people don’t know about, people aren’t privy to.” He added that the group’s hometown of Compton, LA will play an important role in the film.
