Jimmy Barnes has always packed one of the most formidable sets of pipes around, but now the Aussie rock legend is getting ready to use them for something a little bit different.
Barnesy has just announced his first ever spoken word national tour, and it’s a big’un. Armed with his just-released self-penned childhood memoir Working Class Boy, the iconic Cold Chisel frontman will be hitting the road this November to flap his gums at a stack of regional and metropolitan theatre dates across the country.
Instead of tearing up Aussie stages with his vein-popping rawk wails, Barndawgs will be sharing personal stories from his troubled childhood and delinquent adolescence with fans, while delivering intimate musical performances of some key songs drawn from his earliest years.
“Just like the book, this live show will tell the story of an imperfect childhood that has led to me becoming an imperfect adult”, Barnes says.
“I spent most of my life running from my childhood and now it seems like my time to face it. So this is the story of a lifetime spent running away. Running from fear. Running from shame but at the same time running from hope. I’m not running anymore.”
On ya mate.
WORKING CLASS BOY: An Evening of Stories and Songs will visit 18 dates across Australia this November and December, in and around VIC, NSW, SA, QLD, WA and the ACT (sorry Tassie and NT fans, no dice this time).
The source material for Barnesy’s tour — his memoir Working Class Boy — will be released nationally as a hard-cover first edition by Harper Collins on Monday, 19th September. While tickets to its theatrical companion piece go on sale to the general public from 10am local times on the same day, with members of Jimmy’s mailing list getting exclusive early access to a limited quantity of seats.
The tour will also be drawing attention to the great work of the Luke Batty Foundation, with Barnesy encouraging everyone to support Australian of the Year Rosie Batty’s campaign to end family violence.
