An upcoming biopic focusing on the Queen of Pop may have found its lead actress, with American actress Julia Garner (Ozark, Inventing Anna) reportedly offered the role of Madonna.
As Variety reports, sources close to the project have stated that the two-time Emmy winner has been speculated as the frontrunner for the part for months, with another source claiming that the actress’ team is expected to accept the offer.
Previously, Garner had been listed among a number of actresses in contention for the role, including the likes of Florence Pugh (Black Widow, Hawkeye), Alexa Demie (Euphoria), Emma Laird (Mayor Of Kingstown), and Australia’s Odessa Young (The Stand, The Staircase). A number of musicians had also been considered, with Bebe Rexha and Sky Ferreira named as part of the search.
Though no official confirmation in regards to Garner’s involvement is available at this time, it’s the first major update that the biopic has had since its announcement back in September of 2020, where it was revealed that Madonna would not only direct the project herself, but pen the screenplay alongside Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer’s Body).
“The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”
