Kanye West Has Given Nirvana A Gospel Makeover For His Latest ‘Sunday Service’

Kanye West has co-opted two Nirvana tracks for the latest instalment of his ‘Sunday Service’ concert series, during which he presents gospel renditions of OG songs and covers.

This time, it was the Nevermind classics ‘Come As You Are’ and ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ that Yeezy made-over with the help of his gospel choir, replacing some of Kurt Cobain’s iconic angst-ridden grunge poetry with lyrics about God and Jesus Christ.

E.g. ‘Come as You Are’ saw the lines “Take a rest / as a friend / as an old Memoria” replaced with “Just confess/ he’ll do the rest/ Christ is here / Hallelujah”.

Of course, Yeezy has previously professed his love for Nirvana and Kurt Cobain by sampling them on his collaborative album with Kid Cudi, Kids See Ghosts.

“I’m going down as a legend, whether or not you like me or not,” he once infamously boasted in an interview. “I am the new Jim Morrison. I am the new Kurt Cobain. The Bible had 20, 30, 40, 50 characters in it. You don’t think that I would be one of the characters of today’s modern Bible?”

It comes after his special Easter Sunday Service at Coachella earlier this year.
