The first show on Kanye West’s Yeezus world tour went ahead overnight in Seattle, seeing thousands of fans flock to the KeyArena for a 2-hour performance promising controversy, sweeping generalisations and – fingers crossed – a face plant.
Astonishingly enough, most of these were kept to a minimum in a high production value, theatrical performance, with support from Kendrick Lamar and a special (and kind of ridiculous guest appearance from Jesus Christ himself for reported set highlight Jesus Walks (below).
Rapping atop a mountain with his followers watching beneath him (because his God complex wasn’t clear enough at this point) Kanye has put some serious effort into his tour with the fan-filmed footage that has so far emerged revealing ample back up dancers who at one point carry West around with them. Beats walking!
West knew exactly what the fans wanted, delivering a setlist pieced together with anthems both old (Can’t Tell Me Nothing, Hey Mama, Heard ’em Say and Power) and new (On Sight, New Slaves, Blood On The Leaves) making the cut. Check out the full setlist below.
Rather than the standard tour merch listing all the cities and dates, or perhaps even releasing a plain white T-shirt and charging $120 for it, West unveiled a series of ’80s metal inspired designs which are totally wicked cool. One print depicts a skeleton draped in the Confederate flag, no doubt in reference to New Slave, while another depicts the skeleton of a Native American in tradition dress with the words “God Wants You”. You can check out the full range of merch here.
Still no sign of Kanye visiting Australian shores just yet, but you know it’s gonna happen. Hold tight and stay tuned.
