In February, Kanye West almost interrupted Beck at the Grammy Awards after he won Album Of The Year. Later, Kanye said that Beck needed to “respect artistry” and give his award to Beyoncé, but the rapper appears to have changed his mind about Beck’s musical abilities.
In a recent interview with the Sunday Times (Via NME), Kanye opened up about the Grammy Awards incident, saying that his comments about Beck were “inaccurate”.
“I’m fine to apologise for inaccuracies. You know, I send flowers for inaccuracies,” Kanye said. “I talked to Beck’s wife, and I think I had a point about Beyoncé’s album, but I think I was inaccurate with the concept of a gentleman who plays 14 instruments not respecting artistry.”
Musing on the Grammy Awards incident, which saw him almost recreate his infamous interruption of Taylor Swift’s speech at the 2009 MTV VMAs, Kanye added that he was surprised by the public reaction to his comments about Beck, saying:
“Isn’t it amazing that people are so constantly shocked by the commonly agreed-in truth? How much bullshit are we in if, every single time I give not just my opinion, but a vast 80%, 90% opinion, I get into that much trouble? When the truth is a mass opinion. That’s not about accuracy, it’s the definition of truth.
“In this fight, in this struggle for beauty, in this struggle for awesomeness, in this struggle for fair play, in a manipulative field, there might be a couple of inaccuracies on my part. But far fewer than the inaccuracies of the current systems.”
Following Kanye’s antics at the Grammy Awards earlier this year, Beck still had some surprisingly nice things to say about the rapper. Then, in late February, Kanye apologised to Beck via Twitter.
Kanye West will headline the Saturday leg of Glastonbury Festival this weekend, as a petition against him performing edges close to having 150,000 signatures, with some punters even threatening to kill the Glastonbury Festival boss if West isn’t removed.
Despite the backlash, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl, whose band cancelled their Glastonbury set after Grohl broke his leg onstage, has said that the petition against Kanye might play out to the rapper’s benefit.
“I don’t know who the dude is that started the petition but I think every one of those votes is only fuelling Kanye’s fucking fire and it could be the greatest show of all time,” Grohl said in an interview with NME.
Only time will tell how Kanye’s headline set goes down, but as long as everyone is respecting each other’s “artistry”, the music world will be a much nicer place.
