Karnivool have shared a new single entitled ‘Drone’, which not only marks their first new music of 2025 but also serves as their first new music at all since the release of ‘All It Takes’ back in 2021. The last several months has seen the Perth progressive metal band once again tease the release of their fourth studio album, some 12 years after the release of Asymmetry in 2013. The band recorded ‘Drone’ in collaboration with longtime producer Forrester Savell, who also worked on ‘All It Takes’ as well as the band’s first two studio albums, 2005’s Themata and 2009’s Sound Awake.
“‘Drone’ is the sound of Karnivool entering a new era,” said the band in a joint press statement to coincide with the song’s release. “[It’s] a slow-cooked journey forged in the studio’s heat, where every note was tested and tempered. This track hums with the weight of vast Western Australian deserts, anchored by colossal rock riffs that could only come from our home.
“It’s both a reflection and a rebirth. This is for all the people who have supported Karnivool over the last 20-odd years. Thank you for the patience, support and all the love you’ve shown us. We truly love what we do, and are grateful beyond words to do it. We hope it makes you smile and smile big. This is just the beginning.” The new single can be streamed below.
Karnivool – ‘Drone’
The release of ‘Drone’ comes just weeks ahead of the band’s Ad Complementum national tour kicking off. July will see the band embark on their first headlining run locally in over a year, joined on all dates by Briggs‘ new rap-rock band Big Noter. ‘Drone’, presumably, will see its live premiere on the tour. Since the release of Asymmetry, the band have only played four new songs live: ‘All It Takes’, ‘Aozora’ and the two-part ‘Animation’ and ‘Reanimation’. The fate of these songs remains unknown.
