Just days before outspoken nu-metal band Korn grace Australian stages with their Soundwave shows, frontman Jonathan Davis has offered up his latest political theory, accusing Barack Obama of using the antics of pop stars like Miley Cyrus as a distraction to allow the US President to assume dictator-like powers.
Speaking with TMZ in line at an airport (presumably on his way to Australia) Davis explained the concept behind Korn’s new video for Spike in My Veins, which juxtaposes videos of President Obama and clips of the NSA scandal, against images of celebrity news makers including Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and Kanye West.
“I think that our government uses those people to detract from what’s really going on,” Davis told the TMZ. “The thing with the whole Miley Cyrus stuff at the VMAs, when that went down Obama passed a law that made him basically a dictator. He can imprison whoever he wants. He doesn’t have to charge them, he can hold them as long as he wants.”
Reports suggest Davis is actually referring to the United States’ National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which President Obama re-signed into law in late December of 2013, months after Cyrus’ infamous VMA performance.
The controversial sweeping defence policy bill, amongst other provisions, permits the US military to detain individuals indefinitely without trial. It was first signed into law in 2012 and, as it dictates the budget and expenditures of the United States Department of Defense, the legislation must be revisited each year.
Jonathan Davis has long been an outspoken critic of the Obama administration. In 2011, he called Obama an “Illuminati puppet,” telling Billboard, “He’s basically dragged this country down into the worst it’s ever been. Like I say about the White House, ‘You’ve built this house of shame.’ Everybody looked up at the White House and America and now I think it’s like a house of shame.”
Earlier this week, Davis appeared on The Alex Jones Show, a radio talk show in the US, further elaborating on his distrust of the US President. “It just doesn’t make sense, the whole thing,” says David. “The guy comes from out of nowhere, he gets made President, all this stuff starts happening. I don’t know… It just didn’t make sense to me.”
“They’re building that huge-ass building, NSA is, for all the spying, and it’s just gonna get worse and worse. I mean, it’s scary times, brother,” continued Davis. “Nobody cares what’s going on behind the closed doors when Obama makes all these crazy laws that take away more and more of our privacy. It’ll make you more of a dictator.”
“I’m not really a political person, I don’t know much about it,” he said. “I’m just worried about my privacy and my children’s privacy. This being America, we’re supposed to be the ‘land of the free,’ and it’s becoming a police state.”
