The winners of Eurovision 2021, Italy’s Måneskin, were thrown directly into controversy after footage surfaced that made it appear as if the lead singer Damiano David was allegedly snorting cocaine.
As reported by ABC, during the live TV broadcast, Måneskin are shown sitting at their table while David leans awkwardly over, his head centimetres away from the table’s surface.
However, once rumours of drug use began to circulate, David immediately rejected the claims, saying that he was helping his guitarist clean up broken glass. He also stated that he never uses drugs.
David immediately called for a drug test to prove his innocence, and the test has since come back negative. The European Broadcasting Union, who produce the annual song contest, have also released a statement, saying “We consider the matter closed.”
