Tkay Maidza is part of a forthcoming covers compilation from 4AD titled Bills & Aches & Blues, celebrating the storied record label’s 40th anniversary, and set to arrive digitally next month.
For her contribution, Tkay has shared a distinctive rendition of Pixies‘ Surfer Rosa hit ‘Where Is My Mind?’. The Dan Farber-produced cut swaps out the original’s guitars and bass for a synth-heavy version that packs a big punch while retaining the surreal wooziness of the OG. The singer’s vocals suit the new arrangement sublimely – listen below.
Tkay’s cover is one of five that have been released to coincide with the compilation’s announcement. Others include U.S. Girls covering the Birthday Party, Aldous Harding performing Deerhunter, Breeders taking on His Name Is Alive, and Maria Somerville covering Air Miami. Listen to those here.
Other artists confirmed for the forthcoming compilation include Big Thief, Tune-Yards, Future Islands, Jenny Hval, Deerhunter’s Bradford Cox and more.
Last month, Tkay dropped latest single ‘Kim’, a collaboration with Georgia rapper Yung Baby Tate that followed on from Tkay’s Last Year Was Weird Vol. 2 EP in 2020.
