LISTEN: UK Act SOFT PLAY Unleash First Album In Six Years, ‘HEAVY JELLY’

UK-based punk duo SOFT PLAY have just hit us with their first album in six years, HEAVY JELLY. The band’s comeback LP, which features previous singles ‘Everything And Nothing’ and ‘Act Violently’, ushers in their new era with a tale of brotherhood across 11 tracks.

“We’re like brothers in the sense that you can’t always be best mates with your brother, but now we’ve got it back,” guitarist Laurie Vincent shares in a press statement. “We needed to learn how to be friends again, and then all the silliness comes out of that – which is what was fun about our band in the first place.”

The disc’s focus single is ‘Isaac Is Typing…’, a visceral slice of punk rock, which was amusingly inspired by a routine moment of day-to-day frustration.

“In a WhatsApp group for SOFT PLAY HQ, we’ll have all signed something off and then you’ll just see ‘Isaac is typing…’ and then it disappears again,” Laurie explains, referring to his bandmate, Isaac Holman. “And then that happens several times. I sent him this message saying, ‘I don’t want this to land wrong but ‘Isaac Is Typing…’ would be a sick title for a song.”

Isaac himself adds: “The song’s not really trying to say anything more than what it is, and that it’s annoying for me and everybody else. I’ve got OCD quite badly and I’m such a perfectionist because of it. I’m a massive, anxious overthinker and I get really obsessed with stuff.”

You can take ‘Isaac Is Typing…’ for a spin up above, or get around the full HEAVY JELLY album here.

Formerly known as Slaves, SOFT PLAY have made an indelible impact and sliced their own niche in the UK music scene – achieving three Top 10 albums, Gold certification, a Mercury Prize nomination and more.

We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed that a new album means fresh Aussie tour dates won’t be far behind…
