Lizzo Receives First Number One Single With ‘Truth Hurts’, Two Years After Its Release

The success of Lizzo feels like a modern-day fable about the virtue of perseverance.

The singer released her track ‘Truth Hurts’ in September 2017 to an initial chart flop, one that nearly prompted her to quit music.

Now, some two years after the song was first released (it went on to appear on the deluxe version of breakthrough album Cuz I Love You), Lizzo has scored her first-ever Billboard 100 Number 1 single with ‘Truth Hurts’.

The track has taken the top spot from Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s ‘Señorita’. As Billboard points out, Lizzo is the sixth female rapper to have reached the top of the chart, following Cardi B, Iggy Azalea, Shawnna, Lil Kim, and Ms. Lauryn Hill.

It’s another milestone in what’s been a huge year for Lizzo. Cuz I Love You saw the ‘Juice’ singer’s star skyrocket, and a renewed interest in older songs like ‘Truth Hurts’ and ‘Good As Hell’. Last week, her performance at the 2019 VMAs, in which she performed a medley of ‘Truth Hurts’ and ‘Good As Hell’, was a highlight of the awards.

Next year, Lizzo will tour Australia for the first time as part of the FOMO Festival lineup.
