Melbourne to Attempt World’s Largest John Farnham Singalong

Melbourne is about to make a noise and make it clear, with thousands of John Farnham fans expected to swarm the Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Friday, 13th March 2026 for one of the most delightfully unhinged civic activities imaginable: a world record attempt for the most people singing Farnsy songs all at once.

Yep. We’re doing this. As a nation.

John Farnham – ‘You’re the Voice’

Led by legendary music director Chong Lim and the iconic Farnham Band, the event will transform the Bowl into a colossal choir as crowds belt out Farnham classics like ‘You’re the Voice’ (and maybe even ‘Sadie’ if everyone’s feeling particularly ungovernable).

Even better: a portion of proceeds goes toward Head and Neck Cancer Australia, making this possibly the only world record attempt where the chaos directly contributes to saving lives.

John Farnham himself chimed in with a message for fans, saying: “This will be a fun event at one of my favourite venues on the planet, and for a very worthy cause… Singing my songs for a world record sounds like a challenge, but if they can get the lyrics right to my songs, they’ll be doing better than me!”

While Farnham won’t be there in person, he assures fans they’ll be in good hands: “You’ll have Chong and the band, and some fine singers all doing their best.”

And speaking of the band – this marks their first time performing together since Firefight 2020, and they’re ready to make the night unforgettable.

“The band and I can’t wait to perform together again for our wonderful fans,” they said. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime special event.”

Nadia Rosin, CEO of Head and Neck Cancer Australia, highlighted the deeper meaning behind the night: Farnham’s public cancer journey has become a powerful megaphone for awareness, shining a spotlight on a disease that often goes unnoticed until it’s too late.

“With more than 5,500 Australians diagnosed every year, raising awareness of the signs and symptoms and encouraging early detection can save lives,” she said.

Of course, the Australian Book of Records is more than ready for the challenge. They’re fresh off helping break the record for the most people doing the Nutbush (6,779 groovers at the Mundi Mundi Bash), and just last week Melbourne bagged the record for the most bagpipers playing together.

Helen Taylor – ABOR co-founder and holder of 94 world records (yes, seriously) – summed it up by saying: “We are honoured to give back to our music icon John Farnham. It’s a small way of thanking him for everything he has done for Australians of different ages throughout the decades.”
