Metallica’s Orion Festival 2013 Line-up Announced

Metallica are once again hosting their very own music festival, Orion Festival and this year’s line-up will
see Metallica and Red Hot Chili Peppers share top billing, each headlining a different night of the 2-day event.

Other acts announced for Orion Festival 2013 include Rise Against, Deftones, Silversun Pickups, Foals, Tomahawk, Japandroids, The Bronx, Death Grips and plenty more. 2013 marks the second year of Orion and will take place at Detroit’s Belle Isle from 8th-9th June.

As shown in the festival’s trailer, along with the music, Orion will also provide a wide variety of “Metallica lifestyle events”. These attractions include a custom car and motorcycle show, ‘light films’ and Kirk’s Crypt, based on Hammett’s horror film collection.

When Metallica’s Lars Ulrich spoke to Rolling Stone about Orion Festival, he said the band aimed to bring a little European flavour to The States:

“Our idea was to bring North America the kind of festival experience you get in Europe, which is all about diversity and new experiences. When we first proposed this, people were like, ‘Why isn’t Metallica doing a metal fest?’ That surprised me; we weren’t interested in doing that. Admittedly, a lot of things we put together could’ve been weird, but we were stunned how people really vibed on it.”

As for any rumours, hopes or expectations that Metallica may play one of their records such as The Black Album or Kill ‘Em All, which turns 30 this year, in full at Orion Festival, Lars told Revolver it’s an unlikely prospect:

“If I was a betting man, which I’m not, I would probably not put too much money on that. I think you’ve got to be careful that it doesn’t become something that people expect from you every year, especially when you only put records out every five years like we do. We’ll run out of records to play at some point pretty quick. But I think, listen, we’ve played Puppets [in 2006], we’ve played Lightning, and we’ve played the Black Album. I think it’s something that we’ll keep doing throughout Metallica’s next decade or so, but I don’t know if we’re going to do it at this year’s Orion Festival. Obviously there’s an anniversary there. People say, “Oh, it’s the 30th anniversary of Kill ’Em All.” But we haven’t made a firm decision on that. I don’t want to become predictable.”
