All Our Exes Live in Texas’ Georgia Mooney will bring together Montaigne, Adrian Eagle and a yet-to-be-announced special guest as part of the January edition of her Supergroup show.
With the first edition of the new year taking place at Sydney’s Giant Dwarf Theatre on Friday, 24th January, Mooney’s Supergroup show brings together a range of Australian songwriters and puts them onstage for an event that sits somewhere between chat show and concert.
Seated in a semi-circle, the four songwriters go around the group, each taking turns performing a song while the other join in beside them. Mooney also interviews featured artists about their process and experiences, providing audiences with intimate insight into their creative practice.
It sounds super interesting, and seems like a pretty rare chance to get a look into the creative machinery ticking behind some of the country’s songwriters. Each night the songwriters and house band changes, meaning no two events are the same.
“Supergroup came from an undying fascination with songs and the stories that accompany them. I never cease to be amazed by the quality and diversity of songwriting coming out of the Australian music community,” explains Mooney.
“I wanted Supergroup to bring together artists who may not otherwise have a chance to share the stage and see what magic they can create together.”
“What I didn’t expect was the way the intimacy and spontaneity of the performances seems to strip the songs back to their purest and most exciting state. You can really feel the joy in live collaboration,” she adds.
“It’s been an utterly heart-warming experience and I look forward to continuing to grow the shows and take them around the country.”
Mooney first debuted the program back in April of this year as part of an Artist in Residence Program at Giant Dwarf, which saw guests including Tim Rogers, Dan Kelly, Fanny Lumsden, Urthboy and more take the stage.
This month’s edition will host Melbourne artist Olympia along with Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson, Davey Lave of You Am I and, of course, Mooney herself. That one’s happening tomorrow night – Saturday, 21st December.
Rounding out the summer series will be a performance on Sunday, 23rd February, the lineup for which will be announced soon.
