Despite living in an age where even the most unlikely disbanded bands have re-banded, The Mars Volta reuniting still feels impossible. However, founding member Omar Rodriguez-Lopez has come out in favour of a reunion, explaining it’s all just a matter of scheduling, really.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, Rodriguez-Lopez expressed a keenness to reunite the band “at some point”. He explains that right now his focus is firmly placed on At The Drive-In, however when the stars align just right, there’s hope.
“At some point, we’d love to do [Mars Volta] again too, you know what I mean? There’s so much to do there as well. Obviously now we’re focused on At the Drive-In and making this record great and touring. Jon Theodore is doing Queens of the Stone Age right now.”
Rodriguez-Lopez is aware that time is a factor, explaining that there are only four original members of the band still alive. Found members Jeremy Ward and Ikey Owens have since passed away leaving just Jon Theodore, Eva Gardner, Omar and Cedric Bixler-Zavala as the surviving members.
He adds, “we hope that it all lines up” and that deep down, “I just have a feeling it will. Life has a funny way of working out that way.”
The Mars Volta threw in the towel three years ago after garnering a cult-like following. Since the demise, members have gone onto pursue various creative outlets including Bosnian Rainbows, Antimasque, and various solo projects including Omar’s latest, and clearly time consuming project involving 12 new albums this year.
The aforementioned and highly functional At The Drive-In will be in town in a matter of days now for Splendour In The Grass and their subsequent sideshows.
Now just to get you even keener…
