Pharrell Williams Announces Surprise Solo Album ‘G I R L’

Pharrell Williams has surprised fans and announced that he’ll be releasing his long-rumoured new solo album, the follow-up to his 2006 solo debut, In My Mind, this March, although after Beyoncé‘s no-notice release of her self-titled record last year, ten days ain’t feeling like much of a surprise.

A trailer for the record, entitled G I R L, was unveiled today, featuring the usual low-key fare you’d expect from the performer, like a full orchestra, dramatic tears behind sunglasses, and a selection of dapper hats. Pharrell also revealed the similarly ostentatious artwork for the new record.

Williams has released a statement expressing his excitement about the release, writing:

“When Columbia Records presented me with the opportunity to make an album, three things came to mind. One was the sense of overwhelming honour that I felt when I realised that they were interested in partnering with me on the album that I had always dreamt of making. Two, it would have to feel festive and urgent. And three, I instantly knew it would be called ‘G I R L’. I hope you like it.”

G I R L will be released internationally on 3rd March and will feature Williams’ smash hit Happy, which also appeared on the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack. Pharrell will soon be heading to Australia to play Future Music Festival, kicking off Saturday, 1st March, as well as a run of headline shows.
