Punk and alt rock extravaganza Riot Fest has revealed hugely impressive lineups for its Chicago and Denver festivals, which once again has many of us seething at our unavoidable geographical handicap. Key players on this year’s bill include the incomparable The Cure, Jane’s Addiction, The National, Rise Against, Slayer and the Wu-Tang Clan.
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Chicago instalment of the festival will take place September 12-14, sandwiched between two other Riot Fests, in Toronto on September 6-7 and Denver on September 19-21. The Cure will be headlining all three.
Other notable acts include some of the biggest names from the entire history of the punk and rock scenes. The Flaming Lips are named on the bill, as well as Weezer, The Offspring, Patti Smith, Thurston Moore, The Afghan Whigs, Superchunk, GWAR, Kurt Vile, Mastodon, Metric, The Dandy Warhols plus Macaulay Culkin‘s all-pizza-related Velvet Underground tribute band, The Pizza Underground.
Also scheduled to appear are Pussy Riot members and activists Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alekhina who are expected to participate in an “interactive panel discussion.” Riot Fest first teased the impending lineup announcement with a short black and white video of a family sitting around the radio, featuring song snippets from Social Distortion, Taking Back Sunday and Descendents.
Tickets to all three festivals are now available through the festival’s website. A press release notes that even more bands will be announced soon.
