If you’re a Gold Coast-based musician looking to hone your craft, look no further.
Southern Cross University has brought its music degree to its Gold Coast campus, offering a Bachelor of Contemporary Music from 2020 that will operate through the Coomera Creative Campus in the city’s north.
“The Gold Coast has a vibrant contemporary music scene and it will be great to be able to offer the program to aspiring musicians in the area,” says Coordinator Dr. Matt Hill about the course’s introduction.
Vice Chancellor Professor Adam Shoemaker agreed with Hill, commenting, “This is a wonderful expansion of the University’s course offering on the Gold Coast and in Queensland.
“Our campus next to Gold Coast Airport is one of the fastest growing in Queensland and now with a northern Gold Coast offering, Southern Cross University is moving to ensure that growth continues.”
The university is quick to point out the successes that have come as a result of the Bachelor of Contemporary Music program. Graduates include country music songwriter Phil Barton, who recently signed an international co-publishing deal with the Grammy Award-winning Liz Rose, who has written for the likes of Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood.
NSW indie rockers WHARVES are fellow graduates, who all met while studying music at Southern Cross and say the access to world-class lecturers and facilities helped kickstart them as a band. The group just wrapped up a tour of the UK/Europe with DZ Deathrays.
Current student Sophie Ozard is about to begin the third year of her Southern Cross music degree, and has praised the program for letting her play with other students who have different musical skills and styles.
“Learning how to make and read charts is invaluable for playing in a band. This has been one of the best things I’ve learned through the course, along with experience playing in an ensemble and learning about the technical side of my instrument.”
