Two years after his untimely death, fans, friends and collaborators are uniting for a tribute album to the late, great John Martyn.
Direct Current reports that an enormous 30-song LP, entitled Johnny Boy Would Love this….a Tribute to John Martyn, is to be released on July 12 having been a work in progress since the guitarist died in January 2009.
Those to take part in the project include peers from John Martyn’s own generation such as Donovan and Vashti Bunyan, as well as more recent admirers such as Beth Orton, and some of the so-called ‘nu-folk’ generation for whom Martyn was a towering figure, such as Vetiver and Devendra Banhart. Also on board are Beck, Robert Smith, Phil Collins, Snow Patrol and The Swell Season.
The album will be accompanied by a DVD with footage of recordings and interviews.
In other news, Martyn’s final studio album, Heaven and Earth, is to be released on May 3. Martyn was working on the album before he died.
