Metallica played a pair of 40th anniversary shows over the weekend of 17th-19th December, both of which were livestreamed on Amazon Prime.
Having spent much of 2021 acknowledging the 30th anniversary of their mega-selling fifth album, Metallica (The Black Album), the thrash metal heroes capped off the year with two shows celebrating 40 years since Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield formed the band in Los Angeles.
The two performances, filmed at Chase Center in San Fransisco, will be available to stream on-demand over the Christmas weekend, again via Amazon Prime. They’ll begin streaming at 4am (AEDT) on Saturday, 25th December until 3:59pm (AEDT) on Tuesday, 28th December.
The setlists varied from the first night to the second. Night one included favourites such as ‘One’, ‘Nothing Else Matters’ and ‘Sad But True’, as well as songs from St. Anger, Death Magnetic, and the live debut of ‘Fixxxer’ from Reload.
On night two, the band played ‘Enter Sandman’, ‘The Unforgiven’, ‘Fuel’, ‘The Memory Remains’, plus rarely performed tracks ‘Dirty Window’, ‘The End of the Line’ and ‘Bleeding Me’.
