Neo-soul, jazz and hip-hop fans heartbroken by the recent cancellation of the big-ticket Soulfest festival have banded together to salvage the weekend with their own smaller, more intimate event, dubbed Soul Power.
The Soulfest replacement outdoor springtime jammy jam jam will take place this Saturday, 24th October at Marrickville’s Vic On The Park Hotel, with performances by L-Fresh The Lion and a grassroots lineup of local acts including Josie Styles, Thomas Crown, Graham Mandrouls and Soul Of Sydney DJs.
The party will then travel to Belleville in Melbourne on Sunday 25th October with a lineup that includes Peri, J Red, Mz Rizk and more.
Partly masterminded by MC Mirrah – honorary L-Fresh band member – the event aims to dispel some of the neg vibes surrounding the last-minute Soulfest cancellation, by turning people’s frowns upside down.
“This event is to humbly remind you of some of your inner city backyard DJ’s, vocal artists and promoters who put on smaller events which are successful and full of Soul all the time and have for many years,” Mirrah states on her website.
“May we all learn from the cancelled event and be respectful to those hardworking local smaller companies who put in hard work behind the scenes who may have lost a lot financially, not all are to blame.”
“So may we ‘all’ try to change the frowns from an event loss, to dance the blues away at FREE EVENT SOUL POWER,” she concluded. “Stop the negativity and let loose with celebrating your own soul with others.”
Entry to Soul Power is free, and kicks of at 12pm at The Vic.
