The Drones, Paul Kelly Among First Music Victoria Awards Winners

The inaugural The Age Music Victoria Awards took place at Billboard in Melbourne last night, and Paul Kelly and The Drones were the big winners, taking home two awards apiece.

Kelly won the best male award, as well as outstanding release of the year award for his latest effort Spring And Fall, as voted by readers online. The Drones took out best band and best live band, proving that Victorians are as passionate as ever about the Garreth Liddiard-led 5-piece.

Future soul outfit Hiatus Kaiyote were named best emerging artists for 2013, while sister act Stonefield won the best regional act award. Former Magic Dirt frontwoman Adalita was named best female and singer-songwriter Vance Joy saw his track Riptide named best song.

Songstress Renee Geyer was inducted in to the Hall of Fame on the evening, performing a greatest hits package that showcased her soulful voice. Geyer said the award was a career-topping milestone. “This award means so much… I’m thrilled to be the first solo inductee to The Age Music Victoria Hall of Fame.”
