The Killers’ Brandon Flowers: ‘Today’s Pop Music Is Retarded’

The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers has hit out at the state of pop music today, labelling American pop as “retarded.” In a new interview, the singer bemoaned the state of radio and expressed concern over the vacuousness of today’s music and its effect on younger generations.

Speaking to UK’s The Sun, Flowers and Killers drummer Ronnie Vanucci discuss the fact that the band rose to fame in the UK before finding success in the States, with Vanucci expressing little surprise as he says he feels The Killers are largely ignored in the US.

“Breaking in the UK first was great because America is retarded musically,” said Vanucci. “It’s upside down. There’s so much great music that doesn’t get the attention. There’s a lot of bullshit on US radio.” Taking his bandmate’s lead, Flowers likewise had some choice words for US music:

“I start to wonder, what do adults listen to? Do they listen to what’s being played on the radio? You should listen to something that’s for you – not about giving your virginity to your boyfriend on Saturday night. It is retarded.

“Every song is that song. And if 40-year-olds are listening to that rubbish, they’re going to raise kids on it. It’s not even music.”

The Killers are currently gearing up to headline a one-off concert in London later this month to coincide with the release of their new best-of compilation, Direct Hits. The band will perform at the famed Hammersmith Apollo — now the Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith — on 6th November.
