They Might Be Giants Announce Australian Headline Tour, April 2013

OMG, it’s TMBG! Lordy – it’s been a hectic morning of Australian tour announcements, with acts appearing at Groovin’ The Moo 2013 telling us their plans to play headlining gigs while visiting our shores, or inland areas. The latest tour comes from no other than They Might Be Giants.

The newly announced dates are the first Australian headlining shows from They Might Be Giants since 2001. By the time the American alternative rock outfit reach Australia they will have released their 16th studio album Nanobots, due out in March.

Triangle precursors to Alt-J, They Might Be Giants have made a career of writing novelty songs that somehow stand the test of time. Boss Of Me, Doctor Worm and, of course, Particle Man, arch nemesis of Triangle Man.

UPDATE: 05/03/13

They Might Be Giants will be coming to town a little earlier – they’ve added a third show for Melbourne at The Corner Hotel on Tuesday, 23rd April! Hobart fans also have a reason to be pumped, because the band will be winding up their tour with a gig at Wrestpoint on Tuesday, May 14th. Finally, Brisbane now has a second show too – on Tuesday, 7th May.

Tickets for all shows are $59 + booking fee and are available from Metropolis Touring and the venues.

UPDATE: 24/04/13

Good things come in threes for They Might Be Giants fans. Firstly, the quirky quintet have released additional tickets to their 2nd May and 3rd May shows at the Corner Hotel, Melbourne. These shows were previously sold out, so you’d better get on that pronto.

Secondly, the band have announced they’ll be playing their seminal album Flood in its entirety on a few select dates – a new show on Thursday, April 25 at Upstairs Beresford in Sydney, Friday, 3rd May at The Corner in Melbourne and Tuesday, 7th May at The Zoo in Brisbane. For many, Flood is TMBG’s most celebrated album and features the classic Birdhouse In Your Soul.

As if that wasn’t enough, TMBG have also announced that their first 2 albums will be re-released on 10th May. First album They Might Be Giants will feature 37 tracks, including the original album plus tracks from the band’s first two EPs, Don’t Let’s Start and (She Was A) Hotel Detective. Second album Lincoln will have 36 songs, including tracks from the They’ll Need A Crane EP and the lost EP, Purple Toupee. Both albums will come with plenty of bonus tracks from the band’s early years.
