Over the weekend, Tom Morello caused controversy at 101WKQX’s Piqniq at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater in Tinley Park, Illinois by launching a fan’s phone from the stage into the crowd.
During the show, the Rage Against The Machine guitarist invited some of the crowd members to join him onstage. It was during a guitar solo that a fan took out their phone and tried to take a selfie with Morello. Mid-solo, he reached for their phone, pelted it into the crowd and continued on with his solo.
He’s received backlash from fans due to the incident, and has since responded to said backlash, saying:
When you invite guests to YOUR stage and CLEARLY TELL THEM “if you stick a cell phone in my face I WILL THROW IT” and then their uncontrollable entitled selfie urges overcome their sense of reason they get their f*ckin phones thrown. Simple. #KMA https://t.co/NTN2lVep8t

In another tweet, he notes that the person was in the end reunited with their phone.
LOVE having fans onstage, do it every show! If u wanna film instead of rocking out, ur call. But I EXPLICITLY state, “If you stick a cell phone in my face I will throw it”, this likely constitutes ‘fair warning’. It’s not a petting zoo. Also dude got his phone right back unharmed https://t.co/oxjqB9UsOq
